Aberavon Green Stars came back from a 3-9 half time deficit to win their opening league game in Division 4 South West at Vardre in decisive fashion. Although they were far sharper in attack , the half time score reflected a penalty kicking contest with Vardre's full back Richard Brunton putting over three against one by his Green stars counterpart Christian Roberts.
Again they had the run of play after the break , but it took the visitors twenty minutes before they got their first try. This came after a period of sustained pressure with centre Gareth Pugh touching down near the posts affording Christian Roberts an easy conversion to take a one point lead. He increased this to 9-13 soon after with a penalty. And not only were the Green Stars backs far sharper, but their pack were in control demonstrated by several rolling mauls. On the third attempt they pushed over the Vardre line with flanker Thomas Davies snatching the touch down. Roberts was on target with a conversion for their final score.
This win is the result of twelve months of team rebuilding carefully nurtured by head coach David McGrath assisted by Darren Flynn and Tony Cooksley. Next Saturday, Sept. 14 they are home to Cefn Cribbwr and their Development XV are also home to Neath Athletic Seconds. There was also good news from Little Warren today when their Development XV beat Loughor Seconds 25-22.
